With this one, I feel like i finally got the hang of getting the sounds in my head onto tape. This was due, in large part, to Mark Weinberg (crumb, Rachel Hayden) who helped me beat some good songs into great ones. We recorded most of this with Adam Munoz up at Prairie Sun in Cotati, CA. right before Christmas, 1998...during one of the coldest winters ever! the studio is on a farm...so we hung with goats and ducks and waited for the pipes in our little house to thaw.
What a blast.... Then a few songs were recorded at John Vanderslice's Tiny Telephone here in San Francisco, with Rick Stone engineering and the players... man! Dave Kostiner and Ian Sefchick of Creeper Lagoon played drums and guitar/vocals. John Guttenberger and Jonah Matranga, both late of the band Far, played bass and sang. David Immergluck (Cracker, Counting Crows, John Hiatt) played all the electric guitar, mandolin and pedal steel...
Charlie Gillingham from the Crows played the organ, chamberlain, piano and mellotron on about half the songs... while Jason Borger (Chuck Prophet, Highwater Rising) played the rest. and last but not least, Ellen (dudley) Turner sung a mean duet with me...real "islands in the stream".
This record inspires me to keep making more.
