I love Xasthur. He manages to create dark, bleak, pale, and overall damn depressing atmospheres without sounding like he's whining or bitching. As a songwriter, Malefic owns. In songs like Prison of Mirrors (kickass title) and Trauma Will Always Linger, you get this feeling of hell not as a fiery torture haven, but rather as a desolate prison of disorientation and despair. The feeling here is not of physical pain, but mental anguish, torture of the soul.
As far as the songs go, there's nothing new here. Though Pyramid of Skulls is a nice break with very dissonant yet soothing clean guitar melodies, most of the album is traditional Xasthur: slow, depressing, anguished. The difference here is that the production, while by no means clean, is well done, and *gasp* subtle. There are countless guitar tracks, each with a different tone and orientation, and they move in and out of the mix, and change the atmosphere, like a dark journey of sorts. The guitar tone ranges from a distant mid-heavy presence to a fuzzy, glazed over, buzz.
The only thing I don't like about this CD is the vocals. I have never had a thing for Malefic's vocals, and in this CD they are mixed too high. It gets overbearing at louder volumes, as you can hear the voice distort itself. The only time I actually enjoyed Malefic's vocals was on the Sunn 0))) song Bathory Erszebet. Other than that, it's merely been a minimal detriment to the music.
However, it is ignorable, and the rest of the music makes up for it. Here, I think Xasthur's songwriting has been the best, though the previous two full lengths owned, here it's the most depressing and thought out.
To cut to the chase, if you're a Xasthur fan, this will be an extreme joy to you. If you don't like Xasthur, you'll find a reason not to like it. However, if you're undecided, and enjoy Burzum, Nargaroth, or Leviathan, this will make you a Xasthur fan.---Reviews for Xasthur (US)'s Subliminal Genocide
