Street Music…the title says...by and large self-explanatory one would think. However it goes much deeper than that. No borders and no boundaries are the call to action.
Who is this Redrama guy and what the heck does he want? Redrama knows enough and he certainly has something to say. Without being trite or self-aggrandising. Redrama’s message is pure and simple – give the message and the music back to the people. No BS, No Bling, No Big Up, No Personal Hype other than to tell it like it is – let’s get back to square one and celebrate and emphasize the current human condition that people everywhere are going through. A new attitude? Perhaps. A rebellion? Could be. Pissed off? Certainly.
Musical borders definitely do not exist in Redrama’s world. His music and the message refuses to be partitioned or “ghetto-ised”. Hence Redrama has already been heralded with the prestigious 2005 European Border Breaker Award in Cannes for Finland for his hard hitting debut album “Everyday Soundtrack.”. Not bad for a kid from Helsinki.
OK, yeah right…he's from Finland. Just a chance by birth but that does not diminish his ability to see or feel the human struggle. English is his lyrical playground by choice in order to spread the word as far as he can. . The Finnish language, he points out, is part of the smallest language group in the world (apparently only Hungarian and Romanian are related) – and don’t bag the Finns with the other Scandinavians – they usually speak English to communicate with each other. And communicate he does.
OK, off the soapbox now. Avoiding of the usual formula spinning, latching on or poseur antics, Redrama is a new original bringing together what a unique vibe is truly his own.
Redrama aka Lasse Mellberg is the sum total of his experience. Adolescence was divided between the twin loves of skateboarding and grunge like many urban kids everywhere. Three years spent at music school expanded his horizons into funk and soul while nurturing a natural music ability on guitar. Jazz spoke freely though him.
Redrama isn't anything about bog-standard rap or whatever that stereotype has become. Much as he loves the hardcore New York sound, he knows the streets of New York or South Central LA are only a sonic postcard to him and his life. Just as important are the elements of Reggae, Hip Hop, Rock, Old School R&B/Soul and of course Jazz. The term “No Coast” is a mighty strong subtext to what his “No Borders, No Boundaries” approach is all about. Why limit yourself.
It is this background that plays freshly on the ears.
“Street Music” the album is virtually devoid of any samples whatsoever. Finger point as you might, the instrumentation is all made by hand and heart. Guitar riffs are apparent and solely of his own device kicking right from the Introduction into the title track and throughout. Horn parts blare out paying homage and yet are human and sonically fresh clearly on the bouncy I Don’t Know What To Tell You and cool groove List Of Things To Do. Sonic surprises jump on the rawkish Can’t Help Myself and the plaintive Rest Of Your Life. Let Me Go features a sample from Matumbi’s hit Malfunction….but that’s the only sample on the whole dang album. Redrama in particular wanted to pay respect to one his early influences who are sadly overlooked. Believe it!
After working abroad on his debut album, Red has come full circle back home to collaborate with Finland’s premier Hip Hop producer and longtime friend Jukka Immonen. Sometimes you have to go away to come back stronger and kinship usually works best. Respect.
Redrama choice of weapon is to rap in hip hop's mother tongue rather than his own, immediately finding his voice and feeling it was universal.. He had the confidence and command of the language to believe he could defy local tradition and appeal beyond his own borders. A street poet born intoxicatingly diverse with strangely exotic elements.
With a confidence born of knowing he belongs to the World, Redrama released records independently (and in conjunction with his pan-Scandinavian crew Alien Alliance with Madcon and Paperboys) rather than wait for someone else’s validation. Eventually he was signed to UK independent label Fume for an EP and album because of his independence, and from there signed to Virgin Records. Having already spawned a Number One debut single “Hang It Up” in his native land, the lead single “Street Music” is destined for a similar impact again and across Europe. Rap royalty such as D-12, Gangstarr and a certain Mr. Mathers has all but adopted the newcomer as one of their own. Next stop? Must be the Coasts….
Street Music…..as diverse as the street is.
