What kind of folk music can one expect from a brother-sister duo raised in Colombia? Well, if you happen to be listening to a disc by Camille and Alexander McGregor, you can expect it to be pretty damn good. In listening A Demonstration, the duo’s first release, one can easily hear that Ponies in the Surf are comfortable cradling their guitars and singing aloud. The siblings proudly wear their hearts on their sleeves, writing catchy folk-pop songs that could melt the heart of the baddest chick on the block.
All too brief at eight tracks, A Demonstration is a fun, nostalgia-inducing listen. With their devil-may-care lyrics, the duo shine their brightest on songs like "More to Living" and "Government Brand." The influences of such artists as Donovan, the Beatles, and quite possibly Os Mutantes, are made that much better by the pair’s simple harmonies. Although some songs like "Ventricle" are cloyingly sweet, others are disarmingly clever; "Giparales" sounds like it could have served as the soundtrack to a shootout in a spaghetti western film.
A Demonstration proves that sometimes simplicity in music is really the best way to capture a song at its best. In a family where music is king, the McGregors are already playing packed shows in the Northeast and are making plans to release a second disc. If the first release from Ponies in the Surf is any indicator, this pair will be a bright spot on radars for quite a while.
