1997年，文斯吉爾與珍妮絲前後將近十八年的婚姻終於正式結束。為了療傷止痛，他更加的投入於演唱的工作。他仍然持續的獲得各種大獎的肯定，而「High Lonesome Sound」專輯中的另外一首歌曲「Pretty Little Adriana」更為他再度拿下「年度最佳鄉村男歌手」的葛萊美獎，以及BMI的「演出次數最多歌曲」的榮譽。接著，他推出了「The Key」專輯，專輯推出的第一首單曲「If You Ever Have Forever in Mind」立刻造成了轟動，獲得鄉村排行第三名，並且在1999年二月榮獲「最佳鄉村男歌手」的葛萊美獎。而儘管他沒有明說，細心的歌迷仍然可以體會到，他對於逝去的那段婚姻依舊難以釋懷。當兩個人的價值觀有了差異，一個只想活在當下，另一個卻把眼光寄託於更久遠的未來，又如何能夠天長地久呢？
在進行製作「The Key」專輯的時候，文斯吉爾遭逢了另外一次打擊：從小引導他學習吉他、親近音樂的父親，不幸與世長辭。在悲痛之中，他把自己對父親的回憶，寫成了「The Key to Life」。歌曲中，他除了回想起小時候跟著父親，透過許多當時最著名的歌曲，學習吉他和弦的經歷，更難忘當他決定離家打天下的時候，父親送給他的那些簡單而又發人深省的祝福。他好希望能夠再聽到父親的吉他，但是如今這些卻都只能成為永恆的回憶了。透過他充滿真情的演唱，讓人無法不受到感動。
「The Key」跟文斯吉爾過去幾張專輯最大的不同是，這次他回歸了傳統的鄉村。十三首歌曲中，有十首是他獨自譜寫的，另外三首，則是朋友與他合作。在專輯中，除了照例有不少鄉村音樂界的實力派好手助陣跨刀，他也再度邀請到女歌手佩蒂勒夫萊絲（Patty Loveless）出馬合唱。兩人共同演出的「My Kind of Woman/My Kind of Man」，贏得了CMA的「年度最佳合唱盛會」大獎。另外，他還成了資深歌手湯尼班奈特（Tony Bennett）創始的著名電視節目「現場點唱」（Live by Request）頭一位邀請的鄉村歌手。他傑出的歌藝，連芭芭拉史翠珊（Barbra Streisand）都深深佩服，特別邀請他在自己婚後推出的專輯中，合唱了一首「If You Ever Leave Me」。另外，他再度跟西部搖擺樂名團「Asleep at the Wheel」合作，向西部搖擺樂宗師鮑伯威爾斯（Bob Wills）致敬的「Bob's Breakdown」，又奪得了「最佳鄉村音樂演奏」的葛萊美獎。2000年的四月，他的「Let's Make Sure We Kiss Goodbye」專輯又再一次的贏得了歌迷們的激賞。
