Hazeltine~Mraz Trio (David Hazeltine/George Mraz/Billy Drummond)

- Jazztimes
「媲美Bill Evans三重奏的典雅浪漫!」-Audiophile Audition
-All About Jazz

Chesky Records
In Your Own Sweet Way是Dave Brubeck的作品,Mraz在Harold Arlen的Out of This World中有一段极为优异的独奏;电影「新天堂乐园」主题曲,在改编以三重奏方式表演后,更加强了震憾人心的张力。

David Hazeltine-George Mraz Trio: Manhattan
Familiarity is a plus on this 2005 studio session by pianist David Hazeltine with bassist George Mraz and drummer Billy Drummond. Drawing most of their program from familiar standards and popular jazz compositions, the three musicians make each of them sound fresh with their brilliant interplay.

The influence of Bill Evans is apparent in Hazeltine's approach to Dave Brubeck's "In Your Own Sweet Way, with Mraz's intricate bass line and Drummond's finesse on the brushes fueling the pianist's solo, though he leaves plenty of room in the spotlight for his partners. The opening rhythm of "Alone Together suggests that "A Night in Tunisia is about to get underway, though with the leader's entrance, they detour into a breezy, swinging performance. Cole Porter's "So in Love is taken at a medium waltz meter, showcasing Mraz extensively. Hazeltine penned the lovely ballad "Don't Walk Away, arranged as an easygoing samba.

The intimate sound of this well-engineered Super Audio hybrid CD helps one to hear the nuances of the session. This rewarding release is best appreciated in a quiet room with one's full attention.

AllMusic Review by Ken Dryden [-]

All too often, piano trios feature the pianist extensively, with bassist and drummer relegated to supporting roles and occasional brief solos. That's hardly the case with this studio session, as even though the trio is billed under the names of David Hazeltine and George Mraz, with Billy Drummond, the date comes off like a working partnership with everyone getting lots of space to play. Hazeltine has been a workhorse in New York City, recording a number of CDs for various labels and frequently appearing as a sideman, while Mraz is one of the top bassists to emerge during the late '60s. Likewise, Drummond has himself been a very in-demand player. The interaction between the musicians is superb throughout the date, with fresh treatments of chestnuts like "Out of This World" and "Alone Together" that swing like mad. Drummond sticks to brushes for most of the session, except for Hazeltine's easygoing samba "Don't Walk Away" and a portion of the driving take of "Everything I Love." One of the Chesky label's hybrid SuperAudio CDs made with a single-point microphone, the sound could not be more natural, unless one attended the actual session in person. Highly recommended.
