Benjamin Grosvenor talks to Presto's Katherine Cooper about Dances here.

Dances is a dazzling display of solo works for piano from Bach to Boogie Woogie; via Chopin, Granados, Albeniz, Scriabin and the Blue Danube.

For his second solo album on Decca, Benjamin Grosvenor has assembled a typically imaginative and appealing programme of piano music inspired by the dance form.

Shining the spotlight on the music of movement, this album was inspired by a letter from the great pianist-composer Ferruccio Busoni to his pupil Egon Petri proposing a “dance programme” as a theme for Petri’s recitals, a concept Grosvenor expanded on for his Queen Elizabeth Hall debut recital in 2012.

A former Gramophone Young Artist of the Year, Grosvenor will appearing at two BBC Proms in 2014 with a performance of Chopin’s First Piano Concerto with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra (8th August), followed by a solo recital at Cadogan Hall (1st September). In 2011, he was awarded the honour of opening the BBC Proms Concerts season and was the youngest-ever soloist to perform on the ‘First Night’.

A superb collection from a brilliant young pianist. John Suchet's Album of the Week, 4 August 2014.

Benjamin Grosvenor Dances

The award-winning pianist Benjamin Grosvenor , still only 22, signed to Decca Classics in 2011, becoming the youngest British musician ever to sign to the company, and the first British pianist in almost 60 years. His second solo album for Decca is an outstanding collection of pieces, all inspired by dances of many different kinds.

This album came in at No.1 in Classic FM's Album of the Year 2014. See the full chart here >

There’s everything from Bach to Boogie Woogie, via Chopin , Granados, Scriabin, Albeniz and a trip down the Blue Danube.

Here Grosvenor brings all of his virtuosic brilliance and musical intelligence to a wide-ranging and very attractive selection of pieces, all immaculately played and crisply recorded.

This second solo CD from the 22-year-old British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor carries strong expectations. Grosvenor has been capturing hearts and minds with his distinctive playing since winning the piano final of the BBC Young Musician competition a decade ago; his first recordings for Decca made a strong entrance and this intriguing programme serves to confirm that his remarkable musicianship is no flash in the pan.

Themed around dance, the disc offers pieces both well-known and very rare and some exquisitely ‘golden age’ takes on the former. Grosvenor’s touch is swift and soft, incisive and clear; though he is capable of considerable power, he never bashes, even at high volume. And his sense of rhythm – vital for a dancey disc – is so assured that you imagine if you dropped him, he’d bounce.

The expansive and intricate Bach Partita No.4 comes across with huge intelligence, the contrapuntal voices beautifully balanced, the atmosphere of each movement defined, by turns rapturous or playful (some listeners will be sorry that he does not include all the repeats). The Chopin Andante spianato is as mellifluous as anybody could wish, while the F sharp minor Polonaise scrubs up as a neglected masterpiece – listen out for the pacing of the central section’s magnificent crescendo. Scriabin and Granados hint at the enchantment of far-off worlds, but even happier is the Schulz-Evler ‘Arabesques’ on Strauss’s 'Blue Danube' waltz: Grosvenor is never splashy or flashy, despite the piece’s virtuoso complexity, but instead offers a glimmering timewarp into a musical Jugendstil whose vigour derives from colour, suppleness and grace.

One vital tip: the bonus tracks available only as downloads with the 'deluxe' version are among the most stunning performances of all. Liszt’s Gnomenreigen is dispatched with a mix of swift, airborne, fantastical sound world and musical good sense – it’s pure magic.
