This is quite simply one of the most captivating and enjoyable discs I have ever had the pleasure of hearing. The sound is quite simply fantastic for its age and so well balanced that you could be forgiven that the 3-channel was almost genuine MCH such is the fidelity and detail obtained.

Most of the tracks are folk-based arrangements for the orchestra (there are two "proper" classical arrangements) and all are played with sheer joie-de-vivre and complete virtuosity. It would be completely unfair to single out a particular track or two for special mention but I will it do it anyway! The track Midnight In Moscow has a shimmering undercurrent of balaika's and a beautiful melody floats on top - simply wonderful. Fittingly, what is for me the finest track of all, Waltz of the Faun was composed by Andreyev who founded the first Russian folk instrument orchestra (and in whose honour the Osipov State Russian Folk Orchestra was founded) - a kind of Strauss family on holiday - and one just has to hear the virtuosity on display here; it is simply unbelievable.

All in all, possibly the best record that Mercury ever made.

PS - my drum & bass loving brother, listened in complete silence, totally hooked and then immediately went home and ordered his own copy! I hope that persuades some people who wouldn't normally try this sort of repertoire to give it a whirl - you surely won't regret the small outlay.

[I know that I shouldn't really award 4 stars for a recording that is over 40 years old but the sense of realism is such that I can't avoid doing so...]

  俄罗斯民间乐器很多,Balalaika(巴拉莱卡)和Domra(多姆拉)是其中最主要的两种乐器。

Review by James Leonard [-]

For what it is, it doesn't get any better than this. What it is, of course, is a collection of Russian folk music played with astonishing artistry by the Ossipov State Russian Folk Orchestra, an ensemble made up of dormas, gooslis, Vladimir Shepherd's Horns, and, naturally, balalaikas, balalaikas, balalaikas. The sound of such an orchestra is far different from any other Western ensemble -- imagine an orchestra of guitars, mandolins, pan pipes, and harps -- but still deep, colorful, and subtle. The sound of the music is likewise far different from any other Western music -- imagine folks songs long on melody and rhythm and short on harmony and form -- but still charming, delightful, and, in its own way, unutterably appealing. Certainly, this disc charmed audiences when it was first released in the early '60s on Mercury Living Presence: the LP was a classical best seller. Part of the appeal might have been its incredibly realistic sound: recorded on 35 mm film on three channels, the LP quickly became a favorite of stereophiles everywhere. Restored in super-audio, three-channel digital, the disc sounds more realistic than ever, with the lead balalaika sitting in a chair to the listener's right and the lead goosli sitting in a chair on his/her left. While not for everyone, anyone who loves the exotic, the unusual, and the extraordinarily well-recorded will appreciate this disc.

5.0 out of 5 stars From Russia, with Strings August 8, 2004
By Gregg L. Newby
Format:Audio CD
The Osipov Russian Folk Orchestra made this fine recording some four decades ago, when the U.S. and the Soviet Union were barely on speaking terms. I imagine that some of the people who bought this record found themselves on FBI or CIA observation lists. Still, it would have been worth it, for the sheer exuberance of the music alone. The performances are bold and exciting, tinged with a hint of danger, and the listener is carried away on a crest of winter sleigh rides through places like Moscow and Vladivostock. Sure, the orchestra was capitalizing on the popularity of Dr. Zhivago, but at least they were able to find an audience. There's a little bit of hiss, given the antiquated recording instruments of the time, but it isn't enough to distract from the music. In fact, it's barely audible. I understand that they have since released a remastered version of the disc, but I'm always suspicious of perfection. One other thing: the cover leads you to believe that this is solely a balalaika show, but that isn't quite the case. There is, in fact, a whole orchestra here, but it is used quite smartly. Those other instruments give the music the air of authenticity, and create a kind of old world mood, but it's the balalaikas that carry the day.
