02. Wagner: Trãume

One of the world’s premiere concert violinists, Anne Akiko Meyers has been celebrated throughout her nearly three-decade career for her exceptional musicianship, charismatic presence and creative diversity. On this new release, Meyers is joined by longtime collaborator Japanese-American Reiko Uchida on piano and the young harpist of the Paris Opera, Emmanuel Ceysson.

The album begins with Debussy’s “Clair de Lune,” along with an arrangement of Wagner’s “Traume (Dreams)” and Beethoven’s Sonata No. 5 for Violin and Piano, before moving to the ‘seasons’ of the title: spring (the traditional Japanese folksong “Sakura,” intriguingly arranged by composer/guitarist/rapper Gene Pritsker), summer (“Summertime”), autumn (Vernon Duke’s “Autumn in New York” and Joseph Kosmo’s “Tenderly/Autumn Leaves”) and winter (Alfred Schnittke’s disturbing take on “Silent Night”). Familiar works by Debussy and Faure round it out.

A recital album, played with her usual intelligence and beautiful singing tone, brings together a collection of varied works.

Dreams...」

Review by James Manheim [-]

California violinist and former child prodigy Anne Akiko Meyers has stretched the violin recital in interesting ways, venturing into crossover territory (and even appearing at nightclubs) without losing the basic shape of the traditional program. Here's a decent sampling of her talents for those who follow the ways the classical violin is developing in the U.S., or just for those whose tastes run somewhere between Sarah Chang and Vanessa-Mae. The Seasons…Dreams concept of the album is not original, but the material with which Meyers fills it indeed is so. At the center of the program is the Beethoven Violin Sonata No. 3, Op. 24, "Spring," given a restrained performance inflected toward the evanescent, fantasy-like tone of the rest of the album. The other pieces push the seasons-and-dreams theme into unusual territory. Clair de lune is certainly a common enough item on such programs, but Wagner's Träume is less so, as is the shift from harp to piano accompaniment that follows with the Beethoven (the harp returns later). The pieces that follow the sonata are again just slightly left of center, with an unusual set of variations on a Japanese song, "Sakura," mixed in with Gershwin and Broadway tunes. Then comes an extremely odd nightmare turn to the dream mood: Alfred Schnittke's setting of Stille Nacht (Silent Night). With Debussy's Beau Soir and Après un Rêve of Fauré (whose accent mark apparently fell into the ocean on the way over from France), the listener is back on familiar ground. But the collective impression is fresh. The design from the eOne label (formerly Koch International) puts Meyers in an appealing light and makes one want to attend one of her recitals in person.

5.0 out of 5 stars Meyers Debuts New Album September 28, 2010
By music7lover
Format:Audio CD
This recital album, played with her usual intelligence and beautiful singing tone, brings together a collection of varied works. They show some of Meyers' range and taste, as well as a disinclination to simply put together a collection of standard fare.
The album begins with Debussy's "Clair de Lune," along with an arrangement of Wagner's "Traume (Dreams)" and Beethoven's Sonata No. 5 for Violin and Piano, before moving to the 'seasons" of the title: spring (the traditional Japanese folksong "Sakura," intriguingly arranged by Gene Pritsker), summer ("Summertime"), autumn (Vernon Duke's "Autumn in New York" and Joseph Kosmo's "Tenderly/Autumn Leaves") and winter (Alfred Schnittke's disturbing take on "Silent Night"). Familiar works by Debussy and Faure round it out.
Pianist Reiko Uchida and harpist Emmanuel Ceysson are fine collaborators. It's all played in ways that grab the brain as well as the ear, and the world needs more of that.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Dream is alwaysin Season...(lame headline - great CD) October 25, 2010

American violinist Anne Akiko Meyers has done it again. Her newest CD "Seasons...dreams" is an amazing tour de force of virtuosity! Like her previous CD "Smile" she has a major classical work to serve as a tent poll, in this case the Beethoven "Spring" Sonata, which she surrounds with other pieces of interest to her. She pulls repertoire from the Great American Songbook (Summertime, Autumn in New York and so on) along with Japanese folk music (VAriations on Sakura Sakura)(You have heard this in every Sushi Bar in America) and it melds together seamlessly. Even Alfred Schitke's arrangement of "Silent Night" fits in as if it were a toy music box winding down.

5 Stars for this record and hopes for hearing her new Stradivarius (the Molitor replacing the Royal Spanish) on another. Maybe the barber Violin Concerto? Anne? Please?
