Yo-Yo Ma might seem like an unlikely protagonist for the tango, but this intrepid musical explorer has taken his task seriously, collaborating with experienced tango musicians. Ma even participates in a posthumous collaboration with one 1987 Piazzolla recording. Furthermore, while he's obviously the headliner here, he doesn't dominate the arrangements nearly as much as he does the billing and photography of the disc. While the result isn't your essential Piazzolla album (that would have to include more of the composer's own playing), it's an atmospheric and convincing collection, perhaps a good introduction for those who don't know the music.

Inspired by a general love of the tango, and more specifically the tango of Astor Piazzolla, on the part of Yo-Yo Ma, the Soul of the Tango album is a masterful work of the nuevo tango, played by Ma's cello and many of Piazzolla's former associates. Piazzolla's old guitarists Sergio and Odair Assad even showed up to work on a pair of tracks arranged by Sergio: the Tango Suite (consisting of Andante and Allegro). The sheer beauty of one of Piazzolla's tangos is generally enough to warrant the purchase of an album involving them. An album such as this one, where all of the songs (save one: Tango Remembrances, where Ma plays along with outtakes from Piazzolla's recording of The Rough Dancer and the Cyclical Night album) are compositions by Piazzolla is even better. Add to this the masterful playing of Ma, and the surprising facility in which the cello fits into the tango, and you've got what could become a classic album, if only it weren't on the classical label from Sony. The album begins with Libertango, a composition from Piazzolla's first album that became the theme song for the movie The Tango Lesson. Following is the pair of tracks in the Tango Suite from Sergio Assad. Then comes Sur: Regreso al Amor, a softer work, though with some definite virtuosity displayed. Le Grand Tango is an eleven minute tour de force in the tango, and Fugata is a tango written under the guidelines of a classical fugue. The next work is the aforementioned Tango Remembrances, which is a particularly nice work, probably due to the appearance of Piazzolla's own playing. Mumuki is a more complicated composition, and Tres Minutos con la Realidad is a choppier, peppier work. Milonga del Angel is a seemingly sentimental work that shows off Piazzolla's ability to express the emotions of a song perfectly and purely. To finish the album, Ma presents Café 1930, a rather slow paced work, but again, as in Milonga del Angel, expresses emotion very fully in its nostalgia. Overall, the album is a stunning work of art, and even those that may not have heard of Piazzolla could easily be lured to his music via this single album.

Libertango
(Astor Piazzolla)

估计当时马氏正参与Sally Potter电影The Tango Lesson的配乐原故﹐加上自发行Hush专辑后﹐他也想衝出古典音乐的框框﹐故相信 Soul Of The Tango专辑对他以后的Silk Road Project也产生极大的啟发作用。

SOUL OF THE TANGO received the 1999 Grammy Award for "Best Classical Crossover Album." 'Tango Remembrances' was nominated for the Award for "Best Instrumental Composition." Cellist Yo-Yo Ma has branched out a lot in recent years, collaborating with artists from Bobby McFerrin to Bela Fleck, and this recording represents yet another way that Ma has single-handedly expanded the repertoire and opened our ears and minds to a new type of music. Ma states that the tango is a dance full of undercurrents, and in combination with many of the musicians that Piazzolla himself played with, he seems to slip easily between tango-inspired reverie and serious, almost murderously rhythmic dance. Ma's enthusiasm for this Argentinean art form is audible in the dynamism he brings to each track. One of the most interesting tracks on the CD is "Tango Remembrances," in which Ma plays improvisational material and a walking bass composed over pre-recorded material played by Piazzolla himself on the bandoneón (basically an Argentinean accordion). This music seems to throb with emotion, and never is Piazzolla's artistry more obvious than in his own performance. This recording has a sensuousness to it like the first taste of a rich dessert. Save room for this one! This disc contains a multimedia portion. Personnel: Yo-Yo Ma (cello); Horacio Malvicino, Odair Assad , Sergio Assad (guitar); Oscar Castro-Neves (acoustic guitar); Antonio Agri (violin); Néstor Marconi (bandoneon); Gerardo Gandini, Leonardo D. Marconi, Kathryn Stott (piano). Recording information: Blue Jay Studios, Boston, MA (03/12/1997-05/28/1997); El Pie Studio, Buenos Aires, Argentina (03/12/1997-05/28/1997); Ocean Way Studios, Hollywood, CA (03/12/1997-05/28/1997).

Yo Yo Ma has always been the frontrunner when it comes to experiencing new water in music. In this fantastic collection of Astor Piazzolla's best known tangos, Ma's breathtaking technique fuses w/ other instrumentalists, who happen to be Piazzolla's closest colleagues when he was alive. Instead of obtruding w/ his virtuous play on the cello, Ma's cello plays the role of a coordinator as he seams soul into the ensemble w/ a wide range of instruments. Yet always in concordance and an odd sense of balance, this recording exhilerates its listeners, and plus the video bonus that enables listeners to observe Ma's playing in the midst of tango dancers, even the dullest classical lovers would want to jump up and forsake the atmosphere of tradition. I highly recommended Fugota, with zesty hight notes of violin with Ma's ambiguous spiccato, this track is a seductive force that sweeps you off your feet. The curves, the turns, the surprises of tango are so cantagious that you cannot turn your heart away from this charmer.
