唱片教出的高音——科莱里

人们把60年代的声乐舞台称为科莱里与贝尔贡齐的时代,科莱里与进过博伊托音乐学院深造过的贝尔贡齐不同,虽然也曾在音乐学院接受系统音乐教育,但是,科莱里的声乐技巧大多来自艰苦的自学与实践,加上他优越的天赋条件,才能保证科莱里在整个60年代叱咤于竞争激烈的国际乐坛。

  弗兰考·科莱里,1921年4月8日生于意大利濒海城市安科纳,吉利就是他的同乡。科莱里的父亲是海军技师,科莱里从小就显现出超常的演唱天赋,突出表现在他的好嗓子上,他的声音高亢嘹亮,在童声中这样结实的嗓音并不多见。长大后,科莱里也觉得自己的嗓音条件非常适合唱歌,于是他去参加当地举办的一个歌唱比赛。当时,意大利著名作曲家皮采蒂正好也在场,听了科莱里的演唱之后对他说:“你不学习声乐太不应该了,让这样的天赋白白浪费掉是犯罪!”

  但是,父亲还是希望科莱里能够子承父业,因此,科莱里先是进波洛纳大学学习海军工程学,26岁时,在朋友们的鼓励和支持下,科莱里考入佩萨罗音乐学院学习声乐。然而,原本指望在音乐学院学到真才实学的科莱里很快便失望了,老师们用上个世纪的方法来训练他,结果,不出三个月,科莱里辉煌的高音就消失了,老师们争论不休科莱里究竟是男高音还是男中音,这让科莱里彻底失望。五个月之后,科莱里毅然决定离开音乐学院,这在当时是需要一番勇气的,失去了科班学习的机会可能会对科莱里今后的事业造成负面影响,但是,个性倔强的科莱里还是选择了辍学。科莱里没有回家或者马上找工作,而是在佩萨罗潜心自学,没过多久他就找回了自己那带有金属光泽的高音,接着,他买了许多卡鲁索、斯基帕等人的唱片,边听边揣摩,然后跟着唱片练习,日复一日,渐渐地他对于不同歌剧角色的风格有了全面的掌握,所以后来有人开玩笑称他是唱片教出的高音。自学期间,他还跟自己的一位好朋友一起练声,这位朋友当时正在跟意大利著名声乐教师梅洛基学习,梅洛基也是莫纳科的老师之一,科莱里从梅洛基那里偷学到了一些对自己很有用的方法。梅洛基的方法其实就是简单的发声练习,试图用低喉头的方式尽可能打开科莱里的喉咙,这种动作有点类似打哈欠。这种方法需要适用者具备良好的肌肉收缩能力,完全依靠支持与控制喉头来获得好的发声位置。科莱里在这种方法的基础上举一反三,总结出适合自己的发声与呼吸方法,他特别强调唱歌时的呼吸与自然呼吸相一致,反对运用胸部呼吸演唱,也就是说只依靠横隔膜的支持,他觉得这样可以不浪费气息。

1951年,已经而立之年的科莱里参加了著名的佛洛伦萨五月音乐节声乐比赛,显现出了非凡的音乐才华,荣获第一名。1952年,科莱里以《卡门》中唐何塞一角在斯波莱托首次参加职业演出,受到广泛好评。随后,科莱里开始了在意大利的巡回演唱生涯,从1953-1955年,他先后在罗马和米兰等地演唱了《罗密欧与朱丽叶》、《贞洁的修女》等剧目。值得一提的是1955年在米兰斯卡拉歌剧院演唱《贞洁的修女》,这部斯篷蒂尼的作品要求男高音稳健、嘹亮的高音,科莱里的演唱被誉为当代最杰出的英雄男高音,人们对他难以置信的爆发力感到惊讶,进而疯狂,斯卡拉歌剧院也给予了科莱里很高的荣誉,他被邀请在演出季开幕演出中演唱《贞洁的修女》,这等于向世人宣布科莱里是斯卡拉的首席男高音。

  1955年,科莱里在那不勒斯演唱了《阿依达》,拉达梅斯一角后来也成了他的经典保留角色之一。他演唱的《圣洁的阿依达》最后的高音造成巨大的声压,高泛音具有金属般的光泽,使人们为之倾倒。第二年,他又演唱了《安德烈·谢尼埃》,科莱里需要面对的又是一个英雄男高音角色,这时,他的横隔膜技术已经十分成熟,用有限的气息支持就能拿下比较高的音,同时,由于科莱里没有正规跟随老师学习,所以也就没有更多的门户之见,表演风格上显得比较灵活。1958年,他与卡拉丝合作《诺玛》时,科莱里表现出戏剧表演的才华,其实,要演好负心人并不是太容易,最后一幕卡拉丝在舞台上相当兴奋活跃,科莱里的表演与她相得益彰,激情、悔恨、勇敢面对死亡,这些都为剧终时的殉情作了令人信服的铺垫,演出获得了巨大的成功。

  50年代末,科莱里已经在意大利赢得了声望,他的名字在罗马、米兰、威尼斯、佛洛伦萨家喻户晓,但是他还是没有机会向国际声乐舞台进军,不能想象,一个没有登上过大都会歌剧院或者维也纳国家歌剧院舞台的歌唱家能够被称为大师。

不过,机会终于被科莱里等到了,1961年1月27日,科莱里成功登上了大都会歌剧院的舞台,剧目是《游吟诗人》,与他合作的是美国著名女高音歌唱家普莱斯,科莱里扮演的曼里科引起了轰动。众所周知,普莱斯的高音不仅高,而且稳定、坚实,与她配戏需要良好的耐力和唱高音的素质,否则很容易相形见绌。科莱里在著名咏叹调《柴堆上烈火熊熊》中,轻松唱到C3,声音穿透管弦乐队,博得观众热情的掌声,在高音处,科莱里竟然停留了9拍,当代也只有帕瓦洛蒂才能在这首咏叹调中与科莱里的表演媲美。

  几天之后,科莱里与瑞典著名女高音歌唱家尼尔森合作《图兰多》,在同一周内要同时演唱曼里科与卡拉夫两个累人的角色不是所有人都能办到的,然而,科莱里的高音承受住了巨大的考验,不仅《今夜无人入眠》唱得十分成功,就连那个困难的猜谜场面也表现得相当完美,他的高音与尼尔森在一起毫不逊色。此后,科莱里成了大都会歌剧院的台柱子,在大都会他先后演唱了《乡村骑士》、《浮士德》、《欧纳尼》等经典曲目,科莱里是他那个时代最英俊的男高音歌唱家之一,他身高6英尺6英寸,英俊潇洒,所以很得观众的喜爱。

  科莱里也能唱相对比较轻的角色,比如《诺玛》等,他说过:“只是想到发出甜美的声音并不能自然地带来技巧,你必须在运用技巧时想到甜美,这些东西都是相互练习成为一个整体的。”他的演唱总是很流畅,没有拖泥带水的东西,他喜欢用大音量来唱,是标准的Spinto男高音,在舞台上他的声音威力无比,多明戈评价科莱里:“我不相信我亲耳听到过有谁演唱的水平能够与科莱里相提并论,我听他的演唱时,他的嗓音极富金属感和穿透力,始终处于其巨大威力的巅峰。”他的横隔膜力量和喉部肌肉的爆发力都是普通男高音望尘莫及的。

  与那些风流倜傥的男高音们不同,科莱里的生活很节制,有些习惯简直像个清教徒,他不吸烟不喝酒,生活俭朴,最大的乐趣就是研究乐谱和比别人唱出更高的音。比如他演唱《我的太阳》,卡普阿原谱结束音是G,他偏偏要唱High C,比帕瓦洛蒂还要高一个纯四度,他追求唱高音时那种巅峰感觉。除了歌唱,科莱里是个很无趣的人,他很少交际,没有朋友,离群索居,晚年尤其如此,独自过起了隐居生活,简直与世隔绝。

  但是,他仍然深爱歌唱,虽然很少教学,但科莱里还是一再告诫学生:“一个人并不总能完全自由地摆脱束缚,只有当你唱一些很容易的东西的时候,你才可以不必考虑它。当声音的位置正确时,歌唱起来就像走路,走路时通常你是用不着多想的,但如果要上台阶的话,你就要注意看着一步一步走,否则就会摔跤!”在20世纪,科莱里走过了一条并不平坦的音乐学习之路,他希望后辈能够少走弯路,顺利达到声乐艺术的高峰。
