Stefon Harris

Beautiful Recordings in the Style Ofjacques Loussier and the Modern Jazz Quartet, Including Ten Previously Unreleased Tracks. Personnel on These Bob Belden Produced Studio Dates Includes Pianist Kenny Bar4ron and Bass Virtuoso Ron Carter.

As high-concept jazz groups go, few have been as fun, laid-back, and boisterous as the Classical Jazz Quartet. Taking classical compositions and transforming them into upbeat jazz anthems, the group isn't afraid to make drastically unique changes to the music they cover. The group first came together when bassist Ron Carter contacted pianist Kenny Barron to work together. Discussing the prospect of covering Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite, vibraphonist Stefon Harris and drummer Lewis Nash were soon called in and the group decided to go ahead with the project. Released in 2001, their rendition of the classic Christmas ballet was a playful reinvention that swung hard and fun. A year later, The Classical Jazz Quartet Plays Bach did the same for the 17th century baroque composer. ~ Bradley Torreano, Rovi

Classical Jazz Quartet Play Tchaikovsky

Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite has previously been arranged in a jazz setting by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, but Bob Belden's charts for the superb Classical Jazz Quartet (Kenny Barron, Stefon Harris, Ron Carter, and Lewis Nash) are also worth investigating. Things start off a bit slow with "The Swingin' Nut," which really doesn't swing due to Belden's overreliance on a vamp behind the solos rather than having the musicians improvise upon its theme. Better are the driving post-bop setting of "Marche Touche" and "Blues à la Russe" (a splendid reworking of "Russian Dance"), which showcase Barron and Harris, along with the introspective "Groove of the Sugar Plum Fairy" and the breezy, swinging "Vaunce of the Flowers." The musicianship is at a high level throughout the session; Carter's fluid basslines and Nash's subtle percussion are essential to the date. Recommended. ~ Ken Dryden

The Classical Jazz Quartet recorded Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker Suite" at Avatar Studios, New York, August 21 & 22, 2001. The quartet features Kenny Baron on piano, Ron Carter on bass, Stefon Harris on vibes/marimba and Lewis Nash on drums. Produced by

Recorded at Avatar Studios, New York, New York on August 21-22, 2001. Includes liner notes by Bob Belden.

Personnel: Bob Belden (arranger); Stefon Harris (vibraphone, marimba); Kenny Barron (piano); Ron Carter (bass); Lewis Nash (drums).

Down Beat (12/01, p.63) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "...A fine new band...uses hints of themes from 'The Nutcracker' as send-offs for percolating jazz treatments..."

The Classical Jazz Quartet Play Rachmaninov

One of a series of sessions featuring Bob Belden's arrangements for the Classical Jazz Quartet, this volume focuses exclusively on one piece, Sergei Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor. As a result, this is by far the most ambitious project tackled by the quartet, though Kenny Barron, Stefon Harris, Ron Carter and Lewis Nash are more than up to the task. Belden subdivides each movement into several parts. For example, the first movement is initially played in a fairly straight-ahead manner, followed by a brisk post-bop segment, a slow blues, a quiet ballad, and finally, a mid-tempo bop setting. The musicians never allow themselves to get stuck in a rut, thanks to their ability to flesh out Belden's conception. In any case, the crossover effect of this recording is more likely to get jazz fans not already familiar with Rachmaninov's original work to investigate it versus classical fans seeking out this extensive revision of his landmark piece.

引用
Having been an ardent listening fan of both Classical (favorites being Bach and Mozart) and Jazz for 50 plus years I have always looked for and enjoyed when excellent Jazz musicians have used well known Classical themes and wrapped them in swinging Jazz arrangements. The Modern Jazz Quartet "Blues On Bach", The Swingle Singers "Jazz Sebastien Bach", "Anyone For Mozart, Bach, Handel, Vivaldi?" and "A Cappella Amadeus-Bach Hits Back" are a few in my CD collection. A wonderful DVD "Swinging Bach" featuring Bobby McFerrin and Guests, Live from the Market Square in Leipzig, Germany, distributed by Image Entertainment is a must view for serious Jazz and Classical fans.

This is the first time I have felt the need to write a review although many times a purchaser's review, in addition to the music samples etc., has been instrumental (no pun intended) in my ultimate purchase decision one way or the other. Therefore, I was totally taken back by the review "Enraged" related to the original issue of this album back in 2002, in which the reviewer indicated that it was "one of the most offensive albums I have ever heard in my life" and that he is sure that Bach must be "rolling over in his grave". Well, I take great offensive to his review and comments (as did another individual who wrote a direct comment to the review). Bach was, I believe, one of the greatest writers of melody in addition to his wonderful use polyrhythems and probably in the early 18th century was "way ahead of his time". I have also read that he took great pleasure in improvising when working out his melodies and themes when writing new material for the next Sundays service or using "old" pieces modified (improvised?) to create new ones. I rather think that Bach, as opposed to "rolling over in his grave", would instead be toe tapping "four on the floor" and snapping his fingers on 2 and 4!!

This is an outstanding collection of music, performed by four outstanding accomplished musicians: Kenny Barron, piano; Stefon Harris, vibes & marimba; Ron Carter, base and Lewis Nash, drums. They are in total sinc and really swing throughout. This CD is a special treat even for the jazz lover who knows nothing about Classical, or visa versa!! So go buy it.....and if it turns you on, check out the related items I have noted above. I came across this group "The Classical Jazz Quartet" when flipping through an old 2006 "Jazz Times" magazine in the new release review section. The group has other albums out where they swing over Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky and Tchaikovsky' Nutcracker. They even have a Christmas album, which based on the music samples, sounds terrific. They are next up on my "wish list", but first I have to put Bach back on to listen again.
