01年发行的这张《Alone in Iz World》专辑里面除了收录有IZ的经典名曲以外还发表了3首从未面世的作品"MONA LISA"、「HANOHANO NO NA COWBOY」和「TWINKLE, TWINKLE LITTER STAR」,这张唱片的销售成绩很是证明了人们并没有遗忘IZ,它发行没多久就登上了BILLBOARD世界音乐榜的冠军宝座,并在TOP TEN内徘徊了34个星期之久!

The late Hawaiian star Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, a gentle 750-pound giant who passed away in 1997, is an unlikely candidate for a career renaissance. But thanks to popular films such as Finding Forrester and Meet Joe Black and TV shows from Party of Five to Picket Fences, the music of the man called Iz lives on. Recording with his brother Skippy in the '70s as the Makaha Sons, Iz's high tenor and fluttering falsetto -- think Roy Orbison in a sarong -- accompanied simple melodies plucked on ukulele. His solo career began after Skippy's death in 1982, and while his lyrics remain Hawaii-centric (and often in Hawaiian) and he is usually backed with uke and slack-key guitar, Facing Future moves in more contemporary directions. Iz's version of "Take Me Home, Country Road" owes more to Toots and the Maytals than to John Denver, and the synth-heavy "Maui Hawaiian Sup'pa Man" shows the bluesier, gruff side of Iz's vocal talent. The highlight of the collection is the medley "Somewhere over the Rainbow/ What a Wonderful World" which Iz dedicates to slack-key legend Gabby Pahinui. Over a spare uke strum, he shows off his breathy, soulful lower register, then soars higher into a supple falsetto -- without a trace of pretense or treacle. To ears under assault from overproduced, insincere pop, that simple, joyful directness makes the music of this no-longer-obscure artist such a welcome tonic.
Mark Schwartz, Barnes & Noble

引用
To gauge the magnitude of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's popularity in his native Hawaii, consider this: following his death in 1997 (at age 38, attributed to his profound obesity), Kamakawiwo'ole's body lay in state in the state capitol, only the second person to receive such an honor. Kamakawiwo'ole's appeal lies in his love for prestatehood, precondominium Hawaii and the expressiveness of his gently passionate voice, which can float through higher registers with an ease that brings Johnny Mathis to mind. Several selections ("Ka Pua U'i," "White Sandy Beach of Hawai'i," the sun-kissed "La 'Elima") feature Kamakawiwo'ole in a traditional mood, using only his ukulele to adorn the charm of his native lyricism. Others, such as the Jimmy Buffett-like "Maui Hawaiian Sup'pa Man" add playful contemporary touches that suit Kamakawiwo'ole's style. Most touching are the string-backed laments that open and close the album, "Hawai'i '78 Introduction" and "Hawai'i '78," initially a reflection on his father's death, later on the passing of Hawaii's native culture. Best known is his medley Somewhere over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World," which played over the closing credits of the film Meet Joe Black. --Terry Wood
