全书仅仅讨论的是自组织临界性, 复杂系统会自组织出现的幂律（power law）, 标度不变（scale invariance）,自相似（self-similarity）和分形(fractal)等规律的确是为我们认识世界带来了思维的巨大变革。本书写的很精彩，旁征博引，但译者可能应该是个刚上大学的文科学生 ，对自然科学完全无知。
整个这套丛书的翻译质量都很差,而这本尤甚。恐怕是我见过的翻译得最差的科普书。 估计应该是某个老师组织了一批文科学生翻译的。而组织者为了尽快出书赚钱， 因此找很便宜的廉价劳动力翻译， 而学生能有这个机会就很珍惜了，无论什么报酬，甚至不给报酬都会干的。甚至把这本书归为心理学。可见这个组织者也是自然科学的外行。
翻译错误随处可见，散落在正文和注释中。例如：
把fractal（分形）译成了“不规则碎片形”（p74 等），把normal distribution （正态分布）译成了“正常分布”（p58 等），把central limit theorem（中心极限定理）译成了“中央限定定理”（p66 等），最夸张的是，竟然把期刊Bull. Seism. Soc. Am.译成了“公牛 地震界 美国”（p66 等），Lett.（快报）译成了“信函”（p66等），power law（幂律）译成了“能量法则”（p59等）！！！难道他们就不知道Bull.是bulletin的缩写？诸如此类的粗疏随处可见，一本很好的科普读物就这样被糟蹋了，而出版社也没有让有关的科研人员做校正。看这本书的时候，我往往不得不从译文推测原始的英文，然后再翻译成汉语。作者Mark Buchanan是个很活跃的学者，现在还经常在Nature上见到他的专栏文章。

我还记得80年代我在中关村上大学的时候, 计算机的书像潮水一样涌进中国, 当时的希望公司接到中科院负责翻译计算机类书的政策指示, 但找不到人, 因为懂的人都在公司里忙着挣钱呢? 怎么办, 当然最省事的办法是找我们学生了, 翻译1000字给5块钱! 而且一本书拆成20多个部分, 分别让20多个学生翻译,然后拼一起就出版, 从拿到书到到书店, 只有一个月! 刚开始我们以为有人统稿, 后来到书店看到了才知道. 前后各人翻译的完全连接不上, 后来希望公司倒闭的时候, 我心理想, 管理这么混乱的公司, 好象也应该是必然的事啊!
最近几年看吉林人民出版社的书, 质量都不怎么样. 不知道他们的管理层在忙什么.

我有很長的一段時間，處於“混沌狀態”，沒有一以貫之的思維，也丟掉了“信仰”，自然，語言能力也“退化”得厲害。我總在問“為什麽會是這樣”“為什麽會是那樣”，在《The Beautiful Mind》的最後，納什教授走上領獎臺，說了以下的一段話：“我一直相信数字，不管是方程式或逻辑学，都引導我们去思考，但经过终生的追求，我问自己‘逻辑到底是什么，谁决定原由？’，我的探索让我从形而下到形而上... ...”，在“為什麽是這樣”“為什麽是那樣”的背後，其實我也一直在問“邏輯是什麽”，或者“邏輯為什麽是這樣而不是那樣”。讀完布坎南的這本書，感覺很興奮，不是因為這本書解決我的困惑，而是讓我對我所感到的困惑有了更深一層的理解。
在這本書中，布坎南討論地震、森林的火災、經濟系統的不穩定、藝術的形成... ...，以及“冪次定律”，按照布坎南的思想，無論這個世界看起來多么的複雜，剝掉外殼，其核心運行的邏輯是相同的，而如果要問為什麽會是這樣的話，唯一的回答就是“這就是法則”，人類的本身只在人類本身邏輯局限的范偉內具有意義，我曾經想，或許邏輯也和空間類似，具有多維性，如果假設人類的邏輯是三維的話，那么通過三維的邏輯能夠認識三維邏輯世界並且能解釋三維邏輯系統里的問題，至於三維邏輯的本身，三維邏輯是解釋不了的。
這裡面的意義很重要，由此我對“主流”與“批判主流”之類的問題都表示懷疑，在布坎南提出的在一個系統裡面自形成的“臨界狀態”中混亂與秩序具有其“自然合法性”，世界本來如此！
