Ray Charles 2004年6月10日病逝于美国加州,享年73岁,而在生命的73年中,有67年生活在黑暗中,那双总是隐藏在墨镜后面的眼睛,由于青光眼,只给他带来6年的光明.
失明后的Ray,耳朵被家乡那种乡村、蓝调、灵魂、爵士五味杂陈的音乐环境唤醒. Ray学会了用布莱叶盲文"看"乐谱,创作音乐,并先后学会了钢琴、风琴、喇叭，萨克斯管、竖笛等乐器.
1954年,沉浸在爱情中的Ray用自己的歌声大胆糅合了节奏蓝调与教堂福音音乐,以自创的福音唱腔震惊了当时的乐坛.
1986年入选摇滚名人堂，1988年获颁葛莱美终身成就奖，成为“灵魂乐之父”。在Ray Charles的歌声中，已无所谓音乐的类型，已跨越了音乐的类型，已无所谓主流与非主流，经典和流行，前卫和保守。能达到这一境界的艺人并不多见，Ray Charles肯定是其中之一。传奇巨星法兰克辛纳屈尊称他为“天才The Genius”，乐坛给予他“开创灵魂乐的先锋”的定位，乐迷推崇他是“当代最伟大的流行艺人”、“最真实的美国音乐原味”。听过他那综合了节奏蓝调与福音感觉的灵魂乐嗓音，你会发现，最虔诚的灵魂乐莫过于此
