1999年，歌迷们惊喜的发现已经康复了的吉米·詹伯林加入了乐队举办的一个名为“缘起”（The Arising）的短期巡演，演出曲目包括一些新歌和经典曲目。这次的阵容是短命的，新专辑《玛奇娜/上帝的机器（Machina/The Machines of God）》快完成的时候，乐队宣布雷茨基离队，前“洞穴”乐队贝斯手梅丽莎·阿芙·德·莫尔（Melissa Auf der Maur）接替了她的位置参加“神圣与亵渎” （Sacred and Profane）巡演并出现在同时推出的MV里。2000年发行的《玛奇娜》最初被宣传成“蠢货”回归传统摇滚音乐，然后又被说成是更哥特、更电子的《爱慕》。专辑第一周登上了“公告牌”第三位，但很快便消失了，且卖了七年直到2007年才被认证卖到金唱片销量。著名音乐记者吉姆·德罗格蒂斯（Jim DeRogatis）称这张专辑是“乐队有史以来最强劲的作品之一”，并指出《玛奇娜》的惨淡销量跟青少年流行乐（Teen-Pop）的如日中天形成鲜明对比铁证如山地证明了“新一批的年轻流行音乐听众已经对另类摇滚失去了兴趣”。(转)
