there's an article on this topic, which was written by a survivor. here's the main contents:
may, 1946, the city was captured by KMT forces from communist forces.
oct, 1946, the city was surrounded by communist forces again. KMT forces in the city, esp the security police or militia units retreated from surrounding counties, robbed residents in a large scale.
throughout 1947, hunger threatened the city, fuel and grain reserve were either running out or forestalled by KMT commanders. in the midst of 1947 there was hope that the city could be held long enough for reenforcements, yet by may all KMT forces outta the city were either wiped out or forced to retreat inside. sorghum became luxurious food and people lived their lives hardly on soybean cakes, tofu residues, brans and wild vegetables. the price for rice grew from 50 thousand per 500 grams to 200 thousand in terms of legal tender( also known as Fabi, the standard currency of China since 1930s). after a failed strike by KMT garrison the hunger problem loomed larger and residents began to eat elm bark, tree leaves, Quzi flour( which was a raw material for brewing).
in july the author, driven by hunger, passed the last KMT outpost to leave the city. he came across some 50-60 thousand refugees in the area between KMT and communist forces. the KMT forces did not allow refugees to return to Changchun, while the communist at the beginning allowed refugees to pass their positions, but later forbade so. therefore these 50-60 thousand refugees were trapped there with nowhere to go. communist sentinels found the refugees and said to them: according to military instructions no one is allowed to pass. u can go back to the city and eat there. once the grain reserve is out, then Changchun is not far away from liberation. these refugees were shot at by both sides when they exchanged fire. the author and his wife secretly passed the cordon and finally made their way to Tianjin( a northern city) where they heard the news that in Changchun cannibalism was practised and in the black market human meat was sold at 1.5 million legal tender per 500 grams, and price for rice hit a record high of 150 million per 500 grams...
