音乐风格：Post-Metal / Sludge / Doom Metal / Rock / Experimental
Battle of Mice got #2 in Decibel's album of the year, and it was post-metal with a hot chick as a singer, which definitely made me curious enough to get this album. While the hot chick is a very good singer, everything else in this album is a major disappointment.
Indeed, it's hard not to think that Julie Xmas is not singing over some really generic backing tracks. It's a shame she's in this band really, shes an excellent singer. There's a huge amount of disturbing vocals in here.. Whether that's the freaky child like voices she uses in songs like Bones in the Water, the straight out screaming she does in most of the songs, and the all-too-rare moments when she sings in a clean, almost angelic voice, she sounds pretty passionate, pretty powerful, just generally awesome! I can say with confidence that she'll be someone to watch in the future. There's no operatic vocals, no "Yeah, I'm a female who can death growl!" Kind of moments, just some disturbingly awesome stuff that fits the songs perfectly. The lyrics are pretty good too.
With someone as talented as her, you'd think that the record would be pretty solid.. Generally, the vocals are what stuffs an album up. Unfortunately, the other three band members sound completely disinterested. Everything crawls along with no energy, there's very little in terms of memorable riffs, and nothing ever really goes anywhere. The attempts at heavy riffing are terrible and the mellow bits are possibly even worse. To put it simply? Well, this is post-metal/sludge/whatever at it's most cliched and terrible. Quiet-Loud bits, no real attempt at being catchy. The real killer is, and I know I'm repeating myself, there's no passion or energy to the instruments. Maybe anything compared to Julie Xmas's vocals is going to sound boring, but there's nothing exciting here.
Yeah, this album sucks. It's a shame that such a talented vocalist has to make do with such a sub standard band. Hopefully we'll get a solo project soon enough. Don't buy this, you won't need it.Battle of Mice got #2 in Decibel's album of the year, and it was post-metal with a hot chick as a singer, which definitely made me curious enough to get this album.
