正如游戏副标题所示,二战的血泪史已经成为过去,ETQW描述的是另一场规模更大的战争,这场战争取源于“Quake”正史,相当于“Quake Ⅱ”和“Quake Ⅳ”之间的序曲,我们甚至可以称它为“Quake”外传。ETQW的故事大约发生在2060-2065年之间,外星异形“Strogg”大规模入侵地球,给人类世界带来了骚动,地球精英部队组成全球防御力量(GDF)进行抵抗,一场势均力敌的对抗则演变成惊天动地的世纪大战。游戏中的关卡将取材于 “Strogg”入侵战中的关键历史性战役,如GDF得到了“Strogg”的时空门技术,并对其进行反击。尽管ETQW在内容上与前作有着很大的不同,但核心部分却还是一样的,例如目标驱使式的进行方式,即玩家必须完成这个目标后方可进行下一个目标,而 ETQW在此基础上强调了对区域的占领,这种玩法类似于《战地2》,当你占领了某个区域,那个区域就相当于你的新基地,即使你被杀,也会在新基地里重生。所有区域都是互相连接的,因此必须按照顺序将其占领,而且只有完成指定的目标才能取得区域的控制权。
