记得当初一眼就给这张唱片的封套吸引住了视线, 昏暗的光线下让人隐约可辨的黑人歌手, 那缭绕的熏烟, 那病态的陶醉, 和Tricky的Blowback的封套同出一辙. 细看下发现了一句有趣的文案:"an experimental fusion of hip-hop and jazz", 今天看来hip hop和jazz的融合已经谈不上任何的experimental, 这似乎是再自然不过的事情, 不过想来对于一张发行于93年的唱片, 在当时说来的确是一种挺前卫的fusion方式.

　　Jazzmatazz是一个由rapper/composer Guru领队的Jazz-Rap系列, 风格以Acid-Jazz为主线, 辅以Funk和Reggea. Jazzmatazz系列中有数Vol.1为最为出彩, Guru在Hip hop Scene是一个比较重要的人物, 从而才有能耐请来一大帮客席乐手, 这也是Jazzmatazz得以如此血肉丰满的原因, guestlist包括Acid Jazz乐手Carleen Anderson和Ronny Jordan以及四人组N'Dea Davenport, Jazz-Funk乐手Roy Ayers, Smooth Soul的小号手Donald Byrd, Post-Bop好手Courtney Pine和Lonnie Liston Smith, 最后还有法国Hip hop新锐Mc Solar.

　　 Jazzmatazz Vol.1作为一张Jazz-Rap唱片, 但幸好没有把一些底层粗俗Rap的成分糟蹋了爵士, Guru联袂法国Hip Hop好手Mc Solar复杂的rappin'部分非常舒服, 明显力度放轻了很多, 是一种轻盈的姿态而来, 给人一种warm light groove的感觉. 但这次无疑是喧宾夺主, 一众乐手使得每首歌的编排都细致迥异, 让人"耳"不暇接, 特别trumpet和piano部分最为精彩, 基本上每首曲目的mood都trumpet和piano来主导的

2000 - Jazzmatazz Vol.3:Streetsoul



Jazzmatazz系列的第三辑命名为《Streetsoul》，这次出击已经是五年之后，当然专辑的风格相比较之前有了明显的变化，《Streetsoul》听起来更加流行，当然其中Jazz、Funk等黑人根源音乐成分并无减少。其中Guru请到了很多九十年代的新黑人音乐歌手，比如人们熟悉的Macy Gray。不仅如此，在Jazz-Rap已经燃过风华的年代，Guru的灵感便更加回归于根源，比如他请到了传奇人物Herbie Hancock并合作了一曲《Timeless》，他还同著名黑人歌手Isaac Hayes合作了一曲《Night Vision》。Jazz Rap风格的音乐性决定了它是如此被人喜爱，Guru的音乐也更是如此让人沉醉。
