从历史角度讲，1945年太平洋战场的硫磺岛战役是一场极为惨烈的战役（美国前总统老布什也参加过这场战役）。在短短一个月里先后有22000名日本人和26000名美国人战死。在经过了浴血战斗之后，最后美国人取得胜利，六名美国士兵将美国国旗插上硫磺岛最高点，这一幕现在已经被创作成雕塑永久树立在美国华盛顿广场上。
