Dark At Dawn - Baneful Skies (9/10)
Yes, this is Power Metal, but not even remotely into the HAMMERFALL/STRATOVARIUS/etc.-direction, but DARK AT DAWN go into a different one, especially in the vocal-section.
But let's start at the beginning. Musically they are Power Metal, but rougher than many so-called "True Metal"-bands, Buddy Kohlrausch's vocals are the main factor here, because they have a certain similarity to former SENTENCED-frontman Taneli Jarva, just with a bit more melody to them. And the opener "Within The Light" is thundering through your speakers at high speed and with a great riff, in the same vein as the driving "On The Darkest Day" or "Legends" with its very good guitar-lines.
That they also excel in the mid- to slow-paced tempi is proved by "Silva Mea" (with surprisingly melodic chorus), the rising "At The Night's Plutonian Shore" and the very melodic "Empty", while "Dragon Tears" is a very good, piano-borne ballad, which without doubt has to be ranked among the highlights.
Brilliant also the Metal-version of the Chris de Burgh-classic "Don't Pay The Ferryman", this way cover-versions still make sense!
Even though it's just their debut I dare to prophesise DARK AT DAWN a bright future in the German Power Metal-pantheon, because what they offer us here isn't achieved by many bands during their whole career!
