GRANT GREEN - guitar
Born June 6, 1931, in St. Louis, MO. Died January 31, 1979, in New York, NY.
Guitarist Grant Green's R&B roots, impeccable technique and boundless capacity for distilling the essence of a ballad, blues or standard into a soulful solo are featured on the dozens of Blue Note albums he made during stints at the label from 1961-66 and 1969-72. Although Green cited Charlie Christian and Jimmy Raney as early inspirations, the linear, single-note style he developed reflected the influence of Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and other modern horn players as opposed to the chordal approach followed by other guitarists. Green was, in turn, a major influence on George Benson and others who followed in his footsteps. Instrumental during the 1950s in resurrecting the guitar as a lead instrument in jazz after a period of neglect during the bebop era, he also helped establish the guitar-organ-drum trio as a standard jazz ensemble that remained popular well into the 1960s. Green was introduced to Blue Note by Lou Donaldson, and he recorded prolifically for the label as both a leader and "house" guitarist. His discography includes Sunday Mornin' (1961) with Kenny Drew; Grantstand (1961) with Yusef Lateef; Born To Be Blue (1962) with Ike Quebec; Feelin' The Spirit (1962) with Herbie Hancock; Idle Moments (1963) with Bobby Hutcherson and Joe Henderson; and several sessions with Sonny Clark. He also released Street of Dreams (1964) with Bobby Hutcherson and I Want To Hold Your Hand (1965) with Hank Mobley, memorable recordings featuring the dynamic rhythm section of Larry Young and Elvin Jones.
Born in St. Louis, Green began performing with a gospel group at 13 and played with blues and R&B bands in his hometown and in East St. Louis throughout his teens. He performed with Jimmy Forrest, Harry Edison and Donaldson during the 1950s and moved to N.Y. in 1960 at Donaldson's suggestion. He quickly became an integral part of the city's vibrant jazz scene, gaining exposure that led to his winning the New Star award on guitar in the 1962 Down Beat Jazz Critics Poll. Green then began collaborating with the leading organists of that era including Jack McDuff, Baby Face Willette, Gloria Coleman, John Patton and Young. Signing with Verve in 1966 he enjoyed moderate commercial success recording soulful versions of contemporary hits but eventually rejoined Blue Note from 1969-72. Green's last Blue Note recording, Live At The Lighthouse, features his working quartet augmented by (Jazz) Crusader Wilton Felder, Gary Coleman and Bobbye Hall.
