《X-Plane》一直是游戏开发商Austin Meyer精心制作的力作。《X-Plane》是高端的卖给飞机设计公司用于测试的商业飞行模拟软件（其标价为 200美元），现在这款已能够以合理的零售价格卖给玩家了。将自己的产品推向主流市场并不能改变游戏什么，但飞行游戏迷会对此感到欣喜，因为这是最好的飞行模拟器了。

X-plane 9 有鸟撞飞机的模拟功能，把bird图表拉到起飞跑道的中间，然后用小喷气式飞机起飞，有意的向鸟群飞装 ，发生的典型结果是驾驶舱玻璃受损，严重的可能导致发动机停机。这个功能用于模拟紧急情况下的紧急程序处理。在真实世界中，很多机场周围有大量的鸟群，有专门的打鸟人员，鸟群对飞机的起降安全影响是很严重的。
X-plane 9的地图功能增加了几个详细的类别，包含了扇区航图，纹理图形，低空航路，高空航路等。
X-Plane 9有夜视镜功能，类似美国大兵的头戴夜视镜，在漆黑的夜晚也可以到驾驶舱操作飞机，并可以看清附近范围的环境。
X-plane 9有火星地形，同时其地球地景可以按洲来选择安装。X-plane 9自带了多种有特色的飞行器，以及作者自己设计的虚拟飞行器，在真实世界并不存在其对应的实物飞机。默认有太空梭飞行器。
X-plane 9 可以改变星球的部分物理参数设定，例如星球的半径，它的重力加速度，大气特性等。这些参数应该是涉及飞行模拟建立时的重要基本参数。例如当在火星地形上使用地球上的飞机是飞不起来的，只能使用大推力的火箭发动机。太空飞行部分也是x-plane的一大特色，太空飞行的动力学基础和平常的民航飞机力学原理完全不同。
