为了取得美国的绿卡而假结婚，其实并不是中国同胞的专利，连法国人也玩这种游戏。法国影帝杰拉尔．德帕迪约饰演一名落魄的音乐家乔治，希望在纽约得到一个东山再起的机会，于是想办法要搞到一张绿卡。安迪．迈克道威尔饰演园艺家布朗蒂，为了入住一幢只出租给夫妇的理想公寓，乃答应跟不认识的乔治假结婚。不料移民局对他们进行调查，反而促使两人假戏真做。澳洲导演彼得．韦尔以第三者的冷眼来看这一段时代的悲喜剧，在老题材中还是拍出了不错的新鲜感觉，尤其乔治在布朗蒂的朋友聚会中突然亮了一手杰出的钢琴造诣，令银幕上下都产生了惊喜之感。
